What Are The Types
of Depression?
Major Depressive Disorder
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), often known as clinical depression, is a mental health disease that causes you to feel sad and depressed the majority of the time. You may also find it difficult to appreciate activities you used to enjoy, and these sensations may continue for two weeks or longer. This sort of depression can make daily chores appear burdensome, and it can have a significant impact on your life, hurting your employment, relationships, and overall well-being. We want you to know that you don’t have to confront this alone, and receiving support from a mental health expert can help you feel better.
Persistent Depressive Disorder
Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD), formerly known as dysthymia, is a type of long-term depression that interferes with your mood and feelings for at least two years. Although the feelings of sadness and low energy are not as intense as in Major Depressive Disorder, they are enough to make daily life difficult and less enjoyable. Because PDD lasts so long, it can feel like it’s just a part of who you are, but it’s actually a treatable mental health condition. Speaking with a mental health professional can help you understand what you’re going through and collaborate on ways to enhance your mood and quality of life.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs when the days become shorter and there is less sunlight, especially in the autumn and winter. During the colder, darker months, it can make you feel gloomy, fatigued, and unmotivated. You may find it more difficult to appreciate things, even ones you normally enjoy. The good news is that these feelings usually begin to fade as the days lengthen and the light shines brighter in the spring and summer. If you suspect you have SAD, speaking with a mental health expert can help you understand what’s going on and explore ways to manage your symptoms and enhance your mood throughout the darker months.
Postpartum Depression
Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a type of depression that affects women after they give birth. It differs from the “baby blues,” which are moderate mood fluctuations and feelings of concern that many new mothers experience for a brief period of time. PPD is more severe and persistent, making it difficult for a new mother to enjoy her baby, care for herself, or accomplish everyday responsibilities. It can produce feelings of melancholy, helplessness, or even guilt, and it can make bonding with the infant difficult. If you or someone you know is suffering from PPD, it is critical that you contact a mental health professional who can offer you support, understanding, and treatment to help you get through this difficult time.
In therapy, we can help you identify the underlying thoughts and beliefs that contribute to your depression symptoms and provide tools and techniques to challenge these thoughts and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Depression Therapy
Our psychotherapy team includes Registered Social Workers (RSW) and Registered Psychotherapists (RP). The vast majority of extended health benefits cover psychotherapy provided by an RSW or RP. We encourage you to check with your insurance provider to confirm eligibility and coverage rate prior to a paid session.
We send e-receipts immediately after payment that include your
therapist’s registration number and credentials. Receipts may be
submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement. We do not offer direct billing at this time.
We are happy to offer in-person sessions during the day at our office located at King St & Bay St in downtown Toronto. This convenient location lets clients stop by for a scheduled session without much travel or interruption in their work day. Additionally, we provide remote sessions throughout the day and evenings by secure video or phone. Remote sessions allow clients to have a session in the comfort of their own home or while going for a (private) evening walk in their neighbourhood.
Your therapist will work with you to find a combination of remote or in-person sessions that work for you.
We strongly recommend scheduling an initial phone consult prior to a session. The initial phone consult allows the client and therapist to make sure the match is a great fit prior to paying for a session. It also allows us to explain our process and answer any of your questions.
We provide in house psychiatric assessment as an adjunct to psychotherapy. It’s best to discuss the referral process to psychiatry with your therapist.
We use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), and Unified Protocol (UP) to treat depression. CBT, IPT and UP have been shown to be effective in treating depression when provided by a skilled and caring therapist that has developed a strong therapeutic alliance with their client. Therapy can also help you better understand the underlying issues contributing to your depression, develop healthy coping strategies, and address negative thought patterns that may perpetuate your symptoms. These therapies are widely seen as the gold-standard for care; however, results will vary depending on client history, severity of illness, and environmental factors.
Most practitioners believe that it’s helpful to start with evidence-based psychotherapy before starting medication. Psychotherapy has been shown to be helpful for short-term and long-term improvements in mental health.
Some people with depression may benefit from medication or a combination of medication & psychotherapy. We are happy to coordinate with your family doctor or provide access to our staff psychiatrist (with a referral). They can help provide insight into options that may be helpful for your specific needs.
All treatments start with a free intake call. The intake call helps us understand your needs, explain the therapy process and answer questions. We will also take this time to match you with the therapist that will best meet your needs.
The first session is an “intake session” where we provide a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment to help us understand your lived experience, refine your goals for therapy, and determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
The following sessions will start with a check-in and collaboratively setting an agenda for the session. Your therapist will guide you through your individualized treatment plan and provide resources between sessions. Additionally, we will provide opportunities to measure your progress in therapy and solicit feedback. This feedback assures your therapist is dynamically adjusting care based on your evolving needs throughout the therapeutic process.
