Couples Counselling in Toronto

How do we know if we need couples therapy?

Determining if couples therapy is right for you involves reflecting on your relationship and being honest about your well-being and the collective well-being of your partnership.

Some couples attend therapy to get clarity and advice to help them resolve a specific difficult situation – like infidelity or deep financial issues. Other couples find that a relationship therapist helps them learn and practice communication skills that deepen their intimacy and strengthen their relationship, helping to manage future issues.

Talm Therapy

Therapy can help couples work through:

Communication Problems

Difficulties in expressing feelings, active listening, or understanding each other can strain a relationship. Your therapist will create a safe container for both partners to be heard and understood during therapy, leading to improved communication patterns and healthier interactions in day-to-day life.

Conflict Resolution

When you’re struggling with frequent disagreements, arguments, and unresolved conflicts, therapy provides a toolbox of strategies for addressing these issues constructively and developing mutually satisfying solutions.

Intimacy and Sexual Issues

Challenges related to intimacy, desire, or sexual satisfaction can impact a relationship. Couples counselling provides a safe container to explore these sensitive topics and find ways to enhance intimacy.

Trust and Infidelity

Betrayal, trust issues, or infidelity can significantly damage a relationship. Therapy helps to rebuild trust, understand motivations, and gradually heal emotional wounds.

Financial Stress

When money-related conflicts, differing financial habits, or financial stress are putting a strain on your partnership, couples therapy helps you navigate financial challenges and create shared goals.

Parenting and Family Dynamics

Parenting styles, family roles, or extended family dynamics can cause tension between partners and make it difficult to maintain a harmonious household. We offer guidance on effective co-parenting and family communication.

Life Transitions

Major life changes such as moving, career shifts, or health issues can impact a relationship. Therapy can help you adapt to transitions while maintaining a strong bond.

Emotional Distance

Feeling disconnected or emotionally distant from a partner can be distressing. Couples therapy explores the underlying mechanisms of disconnection and equips you with strategies to restore your emotional connection.

Our approach to couples therapy

Frequently Asked Questions

We believe strongly in a client-centred approach, where the couple is defined as the client. Our role is to professionally guide and support the specific goals that you and your partner bring to the session.

Rather than imposing our own beliefs or biases, we aim to empower couples to make informed decisions about their relationship. Through open communication and collaborative problem-solving, we work together to explore and address the issues that are causing tension or conflict in the relationship.

Yes, we start with a couples initial consultation attended by both partners. During the consultation, we have the opportunity to hear about your needs, tell you about the process, and answer any questions. Our first “official” session is a couples intake session that both partners attend too. We then schedule individual sessions with both partners to make sure we fully understand each partner’s lived experience. The feedback session and all following sessions are attended by both partners.

We prefer to schedule the initial couples consultation as a 30 minute secure video call. All future sessions may be attended either in-person or remotely via secure video call. However, your therapist may suggest attending in-person sessions to ensure that your specific partnership gets the most out of each therapy session.

Couples therapy is an important investment in the health of your relationship.

Our sessions are based on professional guidelines, therapist training and the specific needs of each couple. The costs range from $185 per individual session (50 min) in the assessment phase to $248 per couple session (80 min) in the intake and treatment phase. All posted prices are inclusive of HST. Many of our clients are able to have our services reimbursed through insurance or benefit plans, as all our mental-health professionals are masters level therapists and are registered in good standing with their professional regulatory college.
